  Recognizing pictures
 
Illustration by Andrea Elovson, from The Kindergarten Survival Handbook Although children are not expected to read or write before kindergarten, much of what children will be learning all through school involves pictures, words, books, reading, and writing. A good way to start getting children interested in books is with the pictures.
 
Ask your child to show you something in the room that's a picture.

Then you can point to something in the room and ask your child to find something like it in the picture.

Sometimes, point to something in the picture, and see if your child can find something like it in the room.
